Freight Train

This simple book introduces young readers to colors train travel and to the proper names of types of train cars. The book begins with the words A train runs across this track, train travel and an illustration depicting an empty set of train tracks. Boldly colored illustrations then show a red caboose, an orange tank car, a yellow hopper car, a green cattle car, a blue gondola car, a purple box car, train travel and a black tender car--all of which are attached to a black steam engine. At first, the train is stationary, but as the text progresses, the train picks up steam as it travels through tunnels, by cities, train travel and over trestles. The book then comes full circle, once again showing an empty set of tracks, this time with only a whiff of smoke as a reminder of the train that quickly passed over them. Combining two popular children's book subjects (trains train travel and color identification), FREIGHT TRAIN was inspired by the author's childhood fascination with freight trains train travel and is a 1979 Caldecott Honor Book.
